George & Ethel

This photo was taken in 1939, when they were 22, on Southend Pier.  They used to ride a tandem bike, and had probably cycled there - a journey of around 45 miles.

George and Ethel married in July 1940, aged 23 - 10 months after Britain declared war on Germany (the start of WW2).  George was by then a corporal in the Army, and given special home leave to get married.
